In the past the Korean scientific community resisted working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credence. Silence is no longer an alternative.

The STR has been fighting to get the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. But this is merely one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which could result in changes to genes or whole genomes. Over the course of many generations these changes could result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It explains how individuals with traits that are advantageous can reproduce faster and longer than those with less favorable traits. This differential reproduction can eventually lead to the development and emergence of new species.

The word "evolution" is derived from the Latin word"evolution" which means unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has had many different meanings over the years as it has taken shape in the sciences and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species changed into other species in a planned manner. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist disciple who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this view. sell , who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the notion that existing species evolve into different species in a gradual and predictable way.

More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. As time passes this genetic variation can lead to the emergence of completely new physical or biological functions in a population. The variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it is the main driver of evolutionary change. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolutionary because they aren't passed down to the next generation.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and a multitude of scientific experiments, creationists have seized on the notion that the theory is controversial and argue that it should not be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of references to the evolutionary roots of humans and Archaeopteryx - a feathered dinosaur that is believed to be the ancestral bird's first ancestor.

Why is Evolution Important?

Evolution explains the origins of Earth and all living species. It also serves as a basis of biology that helps scientists understand how living organisms work and develop. Evolution also helps us understand the connections between different species. Scientists study evolution to better understand nature and make useful discoveries like new treatments.

The evidence for biological evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so much about the universe and life on Earth and has been rigorously tested and confirmed over the course of many years. Many people, including some religious leaders, are in favor of the theory of evolution as a scientific fact. It is crucial to keep in mind that evolutionary biology doesn't interfere with religious beliefs since it only addresses physical objects, events, and processes.

In reality many religious individuals have discovered ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolution. For instance certain Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution, and that humans share an ancestral lineage with other animals.

It is important for scientists to stand up for the teaching of evolution. In some countries, anti-evolution sentiment has been rising. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made some progress in some states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is a campaign for textbook content on the evolutionary history of horses and their ancestral avian species Archaeopteryx.

Although these are alarming developments, it is also important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from a variety of sources, including fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.

The vast majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reasons for this support are diverse. Some scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions that can lead to the development of new treatments, while others are motivated by the desire to improve the lives of animals and plant species, usually to benefit humans. Some scientists are just curious, while others have an intense belief in God.

What is Creationism?

Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken as such. Although not all creationists are Christian but they are a majority. Creationists are generally divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

The YECs are perhaps the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the world exactly as described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the six days of creation was true and that the universe and the life on Earth were created only recently.

OECs are less well known however they are as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a myth.

Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origins of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is not possible because it would require a miracle, and that the scientists who founded modern science rejected miracles out of fear that they would lose credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their belief "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of species created." The theory suggests that God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species similar to the original.

Others believe that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, called the Great Flood. These creationists believe that the original species were created simultaneously, and that they grew slowly afterward. They reject the idea of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating life can't come from nonliving matter.

In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain scientists and educational institutions are more flexible and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this effort. STR has secured its first victory in eliminating examples of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. Its sights are now set on removing excerpts from Darwin's infamous finch research and on human evolution too.

STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and individuals. Its goal is to weed out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of biology students teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in evolution. The reasons for this are not clear however, they could be related to religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists across the country.

The KACR achieved many things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and an ebook. One of them was a textbook on natural science with a creationist stance. This sparked an interest among college communities. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it is taught to this day.


On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to thousands of people. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
