Three Greatest Moments In Large Bedside Cot History
Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers and bassinets) are designed to let parents snuggle with their infant at night without risk of SIDS. However, they are only suggested for use until 6 months of age when your baby will need to be moved into a cot or a moses basket.
MFM home tester Mehack loved the fact that this model has a bassinet that can be lifted off to use around the house and a manual rocking function. It was easy to assemble and it came with a travel bag.
Size
Cots and cots differ in size and size, with cots being a bit smaller than beds for cots. Cots can also convert into toddler beds. However cots are generally intended for children who are the age of three. If you're opting for a wooden cot, there are usually two sizes to choose from both large and standard both of which convert into a cot/toddler beds. Choosing the larger one is a good option when you want your child to sleep in it until they reach +/- three.
Jasmine is an MFM mum who tested the product at home, liked the fact that it was a little bigger than a Moses basket, but not too large for her baby’s room. She says it's easy to lift her baby in and out for feeding or soothing and that the quality is great, compared with many she's encountered that feel cheap and flimsy.
Another home test subject, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi is a versatile product - it's a lift-off bassinet that you can move around the home, and it's a blast too. It also has an option for inclining the reflux and a machine-washable breathable liner. It was also shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for Best Cot Crib, Crib or Moses Basket. The Lora is compatible with a South African cot mattress unlike some international or European brands. This means you don't need to buy a new mattress every time your baby grows. It will require a specific bedding set (60x120cm). Here you can find the perfect mattress for your cot.
Height
When choosing a crib for your bed, choose one that can be adjusted to the ideal height for you. It should also be able to be dropped down so that you can lift your baby towards you for feedings at night or soothing. This feature is especially useful in the event of recovering from a C Section. The Next2me cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to an maximum height of 58cm, while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm and the Knuma Hutch to 70cm.
It is also important to consider how low you'd like the base of your crib to be. Some mothers find it is easier to lift their babies from their standard Moses baskets if the base is at the lowest level, while others prefer a higher level to give them greater stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a well-liked option with one of our mom testers saying that it has an easy-to-use collapsible side that is easy to push down with the click of a button.
Remember that a bassinet/bedside sleeping device should only be used when your baby can hold his head without assistance, which is typically about 6 months old. This is due to the possibility of inhaling suffocation. It is also important to remember that if you choose a bassinet/bedside sleeper that can convert into a cot, you will need to remove the sides as soon as your child is ready for this to ensure they don't get out of bed or fall out of bed.
Design
There are a variety of bedside crib that range from basic to extravagant. Some of the most extravagant options include features such as an integrated light, a soothing center that plays music and sound and comes with two levels that help to soothe your baby back to sleep or a swivelling footrest that allows you to reach your child in order to feed them. There are also models that can be transformed into the form of a toddler bed or cot bed (or both) ideal for when your child is ready to move to a bigger bed.
The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air For instance has won Bronze at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It is a swivelling base that allows you to take your baby to the crib and move them to the other side of the crib without getting out of the bed. This makes it perfect for new mothers who are recovering from Caesareans or who require the bed for extended durations of time. MFM mum home tester Jasmine loved this feature, saying that it was easy to use and made reaching her baby much easier - especially after her c-section.
Chicco Next2me Magic is another alternative. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It has a machine-washable interior, reflux incline, and a rocking feature. It's larger than other cribs for bed that we tested, but it folds down into its travel bag to make it relatively compact when it's not in use.
Leya, MFM mum home tester also acknowledged the crib's usefulness. She said it was designed to be used by parents and babies. It is lightweight and easy to move. She said that the bassinet's swivelling base was a great idea since it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to facilitate access for mothers who are recovering from C-sections.
Safety
The main safety feature of a large bedside cot is that it can be raised or lowered to enable parents to reach their baby when they require to feed them, soothe them, or change their nappies. This means that it's ideal for new mothers who may still recovering from a C-section. Find a model that lets you lower one side with the push of a button, so you can easily lift your baby without needing to get out of bed. bedside baby sleeper is particularly crucial as your baby grows older and becomes more mobile. You'll also want to be careful not to add anything to the crib that increases the risk of suffocation or injury, including duvets and pillows, which can cause babies to overheat.
The NPR released by the CPSC NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product issues like gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) Fabric-side enclosed openings (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing parts (6 incidents) and other miscellaneous product-related issues (9 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC considered the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance the products would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets, or at least the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. The CPSC found, however that these requirements weren't feasible or effective in reducing amount of instances where infants are trapped by the bedside rail as well as an adult bed.
Many of the incidents reported in the NPR focused on multi-use bedside sleepers which can be converted into other modes, such as bassinets or play yards. Many commenters suggested that the CPSC include a different clause to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers with multiple uses that would allow them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets using an attachment that is removable. This attachment can be permanently fixed or removed when the item is not being used as a baby bassinet.
The CPSC is currently examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR on sleepers who are bedside. The Commission will consider these comments when it votes on the final rule that is expected to come out in November 2021.
