In the past, Korea's scientific community has been hesitant to engage with creationists, afraid that it could increase the credibility of the movement. The silence is no longer a viable option.

The STR has been fighting to remove content from textbooks that discuss evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which can result in variations in genes or even whole genomes. Over many generations, these changes can result in the creation of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which explains the process by which individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantageous characteristics. This variation in reproduction could be a catalyst to the emergence and evolution of new species.

The word "evolution" is derived from the Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in many different ways as the concept has changed, both in science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to evolve into a different species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist pupil who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that existing species change into other species in a gradual and predictable manner.

More recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living things develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population develop new physical traits or biological functions. The variation in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as increases in muscle mass from exercise or diet cannot be considered to be examples of evolution since they are not inherited by the next generation.

Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial despite the fact that it has been proven accurate by thousands of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. They claim that the concept should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in textbooks for high school. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary history of humans and Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestral bird's first ancestor.

Why is Evolution Important?

Evolution is the explanation for the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the foundations of biology and helps scientists discover how living things operate and develop. Evolution also shows the connections between different species. Scientists study evolution to better understand the natural world and to make useful discoveries like the development of new medicines.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so many aspects of the universe and life on Earth, and it has been rigorously tested and verified over the course of many years. Many people, including religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory of evolution. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology doesn't conflict with religions, since the theory deals only with processes, objects, and events within the physical world.

In fact, many religious people have come up with ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolution. For instance certain Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans share an ancestral connection with other animals.

It is important that science educators stand up for the teaching of evolution. In some countries around the globe the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit the teaching of evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC), is campaigning for textbooks to include content on the evolutionary history of horses and their avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

It is crucial to keep in mind that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a wide variety of sources, including fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.

What is Creationism?

Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians However, not all. Creationists are generally divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

YECs are the most well known type of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe exactly as described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of six days of creation was literal and that the universe and life on Earth were created only recently.

OECs may be less known however their beliefs are as intense as those of YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a lie.

Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origins of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is impossible, because it would require miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought resisted miracles in fear that they might lose their credibility.

Some creationists accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and refer to their belief "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." In this theory, God creates the original species and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species that are similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event known as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all species were created at the same time and then slowly evolved. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.

In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional associations, like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view and so do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain academic institutions and scientists are more flexible and permit the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curriculum.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this drive. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. Its next target is to remove excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research as well as on human evolution.

STR claims to have the support of around 4000 families and individuals. Its goal is to weed out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of undergraduates studying biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe in evolution. The reasons aren't evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the country.


The KACR has achieved a lot through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences with a creationist viewpoint, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.

On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to thousands of people. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on creation science in major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
