The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad and was doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. Origins

The group started out as a quartet and released two albums - 1979's self titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a diverse musical background their biggest breakthrough was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, but it was not without its issues. Record companies placed the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us a hit record or we'll take you off the market" and the pressure was on to meet the deadline. Toto was able achieve this feat with the help of the hit song "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their previous experience in the music industry, as the band members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior the group. Their sonic trademark has become the standard for 1980s music, and has inspired a lot of contemporary artists.

The album opens up hard with tracks like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write great AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. The album also includes some more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album ends with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and the distorted AOR, which should appear completely unnatural, but actually is very effective.

After Toto IV The band's fortunes turned to the downside. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band was through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. However, the group was able to release a chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet style of the previous albums. It was a more powerful, constant effort with a harder edge than Hydra. Its edgier sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's greater ability on the drums and an improved, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on previous efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released a few months later, and the group went on a world-wide tour in support of it. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was released as a double-album titled Then And Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band without the single track "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which restricted his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia The original Asia members met in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was occupied with Yes during that time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
