Bukittinggi, a beautiful city in the highlands of West Sumatra, is synonymous with a majestic and historic beacon of time. This giant Jam Gadang, or clock tower, is more than just a timepiece. It is a proud icon, a symbol of the city, and a major attraction that captivates every tourist visiting the Minangkabau region. Jam Gadang is a harmonious blend of colonial architecture, local wisdom, and stories of the past.

Jam Gadang was built in 1926 by architect Y. Roosen. This clock was a gift from Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands to Rook Maker, the city secretary of Bukittinggi (then Fort de Kock). Construction was completed in 1929. The clock's unique feature lies in its movement, of which there are only two similar ones in the world. This refers to its twin, Big Ben in London, and the Jam Gadang movement itself. The movement was built by Bernard Vortmann of Germany.

Interestingly, the Roman numeral IV on each of the clock's four faces is written IIII instead of the commonly known IV. This is said to be a unique feature.
