This sleeper features a firm mattress to support babies' backs and decrease the risk of SIDS. It can be rotated over your adult bed so that you can raise your baby to cuddle them at sunrise or during midnight nursing.

A bedside cot, also known as a co-sleeper, is an infant cot with a bassinet design that clips or attaches to your existing bed. This lets you reach your baby easily and safely for a nighttime feed, comforting, or cuddles. They are a great choice for new parents or mums recovering from a csection as they provide an easy access to baby and don't require you to get out of bed.

There are a variety of designs on the market that range from basic models with just a drop-down side to more sophisticated ones that can be adjusted in a variety of ways including height and incline options. Many convert to a separate crib for daytime naps or when your baby is about months old and sleeps longer at night.

One of our favourites is the Maxi-Cosi Lora, that was shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for Best Cot Crib, Best Cot, or Moses Basket. MFM home tester Emily expressed her delight at how stylish and modern the design and she was impressed by the possibility of using it as a regular bassinet or clip it to a bed to ensure that you can sleep side-by-side. She also liked the plush mattress that has passed our test for firmness and also the fact that it comes with a manual rocking function that can be adjusted to a slight slope for reflux sufferers.

She wasn't a fan of the fact that it had a mesh panel on the bottom and she thought it was too heavy to move around from room to room. It also felt a bit heavy to carry up and down the stairs, especially when folded into a travel bag.

Size

Mum home test Jasmin loved that the crib does not take up much space in her bedroom. Also, she found the size to be perfect for a newborn. The mattress she rated as excellent quality, in contrast to some that feel flimsy and thin. She also appreciates the fact that it has a storage space underneath for clothes and blankets - something she says most bassinets do not have.

MFM mom home tester Mehack is a big fan of the side wall with a removable design that lets you lower it down to give easy access to your newborn. She also loves that legs slide into the bed so it doesn't appear big or take up a lot of floor space. She's also impressed by the ease of being able to move around the house when you need to in the middle of the night, which is convenient for meals and check-ins.

It is also light and easy to put together, making it ideal for traveling with your baby.

The mattress should be covered in a fitted cover to decrease the chance of suffocation caused by dust mites and other allergens, and kept clean and free of allergens.

It's also worth looking into a bassinet with an attachment system that is secure and can be easily fixed to your existing bed without the need for tools. This is particularly beneficial for parents who find it difficult to carry their child into and out of the crib or are worried about their child falling asleep.
