The Intermediate Guide To Large Bedside Cot
Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots (also called co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to allow parents to sleep close to their baby at night without the risk of SIDS. However, they are only recommended for use up to 6 months of age when your baby will need to be moved into a cot or a moses basket.

MFM home tester Mehack loved that this model has a bassinet that can be lifted off to use in the home and the ability to rock manually. It was simple to put together and came with its own travel bag.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They are less than. They also often convert into toddler beds, whereas cot beds are generally only used up to three years older. If you're looking for a wooden cot, there are typically two sizes to choose from - standard and large - both of which can be converted into a cot bed/toddler mattress. If you'd like your child (or children) to be able to sleep in a larger cot, it's a good idea to choose the larger size.

Jasmine is an MFM mom who tried the product at home, said she liked that it was slightly larger than a Moses basket, but not too big for the baby's room. She claims that it is easy to get the baby into and out of the cot for evening feedings or to soothe, and that its quality is superior to others she has seen that are less sturdy.

Another home tester, Emily, likes how versatile the Maxi-Cosi Lora is - it's a lift-off bassinet that you can move around the home, and it's a blast too. It also has an incline for reflux and a machine washable liner that breathes. It was also nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. The Lora is a perfect fit for a South African cot mattress unlike many international or European brands. This means you don't need to buy an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. However, it requires a special bespoke bedding set (60x120cm). Here's the perfect mattress for your cot.

Height

When selecting a cot for the bed, look for one that can be elevated to a height that's comfortable for you to feed your the baby. It must also be lowered to a level that is not in the way so you can lift up your baby towards you to feed them at night or soothe him. This feature is especially helpful if you're recovering from an operation such as a C-section. For instance the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm, and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.

Another thing to consider is the height you would like to set for the cot's base to be. While some moms find it easier to lift their babies out of traditional Moses baskets at the lowest level, some mothers prefer having a higher base that gives them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular choice, with one of our mom test subjects saying that it is easy to use with a collapsible part that you can push down with the click of the button.

Keep in mind that a bedside or bassinet should not be used until your baby is able to hold their head up unaided typically approximately 6 months. This is due to the possibility of inhaling suffocation. It is also important to be aware that when your child is old enough to convert an existing bedside or bassinet into a cot, they will have to remove the sides once they are able to do so. This will prevent them from getting out or falling out of the bed.

Design

There are a variety of styles of cribs for bedside use that range from basic to lavish. Some of the more luxurious options include features such as an integrated light or a center of calm which plays music and sounds and comes with two levels to help soothe your baby back to sleep or the swivelling footrest, which makes it easier for you to reach your child to feed them. There are also models that can be transformed into the form of a toddler bed or cot bed (or both), perfect when your child is ready to transition to a larger bed.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air For instance was awarded Bronze at the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards in the Best Cot Moses Basket or Crib category. It is a swivelling base that allows you to take your baby to the crib and move them to the other side of the crib without getting out of the bed. This is perfect for new mothers recovering from Caesarean births or those who have to stay in bed for long periods of time. MFM mom home tester Jasmine loved this feature, stating that it was easy to use and made her baby easier particularly after her c-section.

Chicco Next2me Magic is another alternative. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Moses Basket, or Crib. It has a machine-washable lining, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's a bit bigger than some of the other cribs for bed we've tested but it folds flat into its travel bag so it is relatively compact when not in use.

Leya, MFM mum home tester, also appreciated the bedside crib's function. She claimed that it was designed to be used by parents and children. It is a fantastic design that is extremely maneuverable and is super-sturdy. She said that the bassinet's swivelling base was fantastic because it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to facilitate access for mothers who are recovering from c-sections.

Safety

A bedside cot that is large and spacious's most important security characteristic is that it can easily be adjusted or moved so that parents can reach their baby to feed or comfort him or their nappy. This makes it ideal for new mothers recovering from the C-section. newborn bedside cot should choose a design which allows you to lower the bed's side by pressing a button. This will allow you to raise your child without getting out of bed. This is especially important as your baby grows older and becomes more mobile. Do not add anything that may increase the risk of injury or suffocation such as duvets and pillowcases which could cause your baby to overheat.

The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to issues with the product, such as gaps between a bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11) and consumer misassembly (6 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For example the products would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets, or at the very least, the maximum height requirements for the rail that is lowered. However, the CPSC determined that these requirements would not be feasible or effective to reduce the number of incidents in which infants were entrapped between a bedside sleeper and an adult bed.

Many of the incidents reported in the NPR concerned multi-use bedside sleepers which can be converted into other modes, such as play yards or bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule a different provision for multi-use bedside sleepers that would enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets by using a removable attachment that can be permanently connected or removed when the product is not being used as the bassinet.

The CPSC is reviewing the comments and other suggestions received in response to the NPR regarding bedside sleeping. The Commission will consider these comments when deciding on the final rule, which is expected to be published in November 2021.
