Height

When you are choosing a crib that is bedside pick one that can be adjusted to a suitable height for you. It was awarded Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards to be the best Cot, Moses Basket, or Crib and has a machine-washable liner, reflux incline, and a rocking feature. It's a bit larger than some of the other cribs that we've tested but it folds flat in its travel bag, so it's quite compact when not in use.

MFM mum home test Leya also liked the functionality of this crib for bed, describing how it was designed with parents and babies in mind. It has a great design that is extremely simple to operate and is extremely sturdy. The swivelling base of the bassinet is amazing as it means you can move the bassinet from side-to-side, and one of its sides can be opened down to facilitate access especially for new mothers who are recovering from C-sections', she said.

Safety

The most important safety characteristic of a bedside cot is that it can be adjusted or moved to allow parents to reach their child when they need to feed them, comfort them, or change their nappies. This makes it perfect for mothers who are recovering from the c-section. Find a model that lets you lower one side at the push of a button, so you can easily lift your baby without having to get out of bed. This is crucial, particularly when your baby grows and becomes more mobile. It is also important to not add anything to the cot that increases the chance of suffocation, or injury, such as duvets and pillows, which can cause babies to overheat.

The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product issues like gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) as well as enclosed openings made of fabric (11) and consumer assembly errors (6 incidents).

In its NPR, the CPSC considered the possibility of adding additional requirements for sleepers in bed, such as the requirement that they meet the minimum side height requirement for bassinets, or at least meet the maximum height requirement for the side rail. However the CPSC found that these requirements would not be efficient or feasible to reduce the amount of instances in which infants were trapped between a bedside sleeper and an adult bed.

Many commenters suggested that CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative provision for multi-use bedside beds to allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets using an attachment that can be permanently connected or disconnected when the product is not being used as a bassinet.

The CPSC is reviewing the comments and other suggestions received in response to the NPR on sleep at night. The Commission will be examining these comments when deciding on the final rule which is expected to be published in November of 2021.
