Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are a great companion bird. They are smart and affectionate. They are best with well-rounded families. They can become bored quickly and discover ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't engaged with them often enough. Macaws that aren't socialized can become aggressive and even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw does not feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds who are fond of playing, climbing and play. They require 2 to 3 hours per day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They love going to playgrounds and parks as well as hiking, local restaurants and bars. They are not only a great pet but also a wonderful companion for children.
Despite their adoring appearance however, these birds can be loud and can be a distraction for those living close by. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be a nuisance in apartments and condos or near young children who might be scared by their noise.
This species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. This is why DNA testing is the only reliable method of determining the sex. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets, require training to learn commands and phrases. This is not a quick process, and it is crucial that the owner has patience and understands that this is not a task to be taken lightly. The use of positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and help correct any issues with behavior.
Lolita's Care
For decades activists have been lobbying for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita might suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance to return to the ocean.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They sabotage her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her an ancestor, on a plan to eventually transport her to open waters. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could live for the rest of her days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her departure from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet
A healthy diet is important for the health of a gold and blue macaw. They require premium food items, and lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. In captivity, a well-fed macaw can expect to live for up to 60 years. The majestic bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.
A macaw with gold and blue eyes can be a charming friend but is also extremely intelligent. They are known to swiftly learn new words and tricks and they are extremely adaptable. This bird is a great choice for those who are just starting their journey into avian companionship.
The bird is also extremely social and easily bonds with her family members. Macaws with gold and blue eyes are known for their loud screams, including "flock call" as part of their natural behaviour. They may even squabble and chew at times, particularly when they are angry or bored. It is crucial for potential pet owners to keep in mind that this type of behavior is normal and should be expected.
Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on the status of Lolita's health, but there are still questions. Akromas and others who have trained or overseen Lolita's health over time are concerned about her diet. According to the latest update on the Friends of Lolita site, she consumes 115 pounds salmon a day, as well as capelin, herring, and squid.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they feed their killer whales, particularly Lolita. The 57-year old orca was removed from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. While the species is in danger, she lives in a tank that some believe is too small.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is beautiful, however her health continues to decline. She's been a source of concern for animal welfare groups who wish to see her released into the wild. Lolita is a resident at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970 was a popular tourist attraction for decades. She has battled chronic illnesses and a debilitating illness that has left her in a vulnerable condition.
The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita's current health. Friends of Toki, a non-profit group, has posted monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These show that she is ageing quickly and that her health is deteriorating.
Since her captor does not need to reveal this information, it is unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World. This shows that kidney diseases often play an integral role in the deaths of captive orcas.
Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita, many people believe that she could be closer than ever to an unspoiled life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has stated his commitment to transfer the whale out of her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.
The move comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. Sadly the plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal issue.
